The name 'Pista' — Italian for 'track' — tells you everything you need to know. The 3.9-litre V8 is derived from the 488 GTB, though roughly half its components are new, borrowed from the Challenge car: revised valve gear and cams, a new intake system, reinforced heads and pistons, titanium conrods, a raised compression ratio and reworked turbochargers. The result is 711bhp at 8,000rpm and 0-60mph in 2.7 seconds, delivered with the same absence of lag that made the GTB's engine so highly rated in the first place.
The chassis electronics were revised to match. Version 6.0 of Side Slip Control introduces Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer, which keeps the car composed through longer oversteer, and the F1 DCT shifts quicker still in both directions. The bodywork was shaped around aerodynamic demands without losing the styling that defines the car: the front S-Duct visually shortens the nose and creates a floating wing effect, while the 'dolphin-tail' rear diffuser, developed from the 488 GTE, does much the same at the back.
Expectations for the Speciale's successor were high, particularly as the first turbocharged V8 in the special series. Ferrari delivered a car with the presence and composure of a race car that remains genuinely usable on the road.
